• HELP! What Can I Do When I First Notice My Hair Loss?

When you look in the mirror, are you beginning to lose that appearance of volume in your hair? Is your hair beginning to look flat in spite of the blow dryer?  Do your temple points seem to be retreating southward?  And where did all this hair in my sink come from?!  Sound familiar?

It could very well be the first signs of genetic hair loss that the medical community may diagnose as Male Pattern Baldness or commonly referred to as MPB.  The medical term is ” androgenetic alopecia.”   The term “alopecia” is simply a word for hair loss and there are in fact multiple forms of it.  But for men, especially younger men in their late teens into their early twenties, it’s almost always confirmed as MPB.  Why?  Because it exists in either their maternal or paternal side of their family history.

What can I do when I first notice my hair loss? Well the first thing to do is not to panic.  The first signs of MPB can be psychologically devastating especially to younger men and to women in general.  Yes, you read that correctly, women too.  DHT can be deposited in their scalp sebum as well, and their hair follicles can be potentially receptive to the hormone just like men. • The Maximum Hair Results are in: Women Want Men With Hair!

As if we didn’t already know this, apparently women searching for love on the net are five times more likely to go for the guys with good hair than for those who are losing it, a recent study revealed.

The UK company Maximum Hair, not currently recommended by the AHLA, conducted an interesting social experiment that helps to solidify the notion that hair does matter to women looking for Mr. Right, or “Mr. Right now.”

The two month experiment entailed posting two profiles on various well known internet dating sites. The pictures were identical images of the same man,  except one image was photoshopped to make the guy appear to have a receding hairline.

Both profiles were identical as well, stating that this 30 year old male was a professional living in London with interests in music, travel and athletics.

The profile with the full head of hair pulled 108 responses while the balding twin profile received 22 responses. One thing that wasn’t noted in the experiment was the attractiveness level of the women who responded to either profile. Read more ›

  • Spencer Kobren Tells The Bald Truth To The Washington Post

Washington Post reporter Cathy Alter, documents one man’s effort to find a solution to his hair loss through non-surgical hair replacement, and discuses the emotional aspects of hair loss that society still seems to overlook. The article titled “What Lies Beneath,” also discusses our inability to mourn the loss of our hair due to society’s perception of hair loss and hair replacement.

It’s a fraternity that no one wants to belong to,” says Spencer Kobren, founder of the American Hair Loss Association. “It’s almost like ‘Fight Club.’ The first rule about our club is: Don’t talk about our club.

    Excerpt:

David Maciukiewicz sits in a leather swivel chair and regards himself in the mirror. He rotates slightly into profile and pats down some errant hair at his temple. He moves his hand slowly around the perimeter of his head, fluffing up certain sections and smoothing down others, until he’s completely satisfied with the condition of his coif. The result: a thick helmet with slightly poofed bangs.

“Ready?” asks a man in a white lab coat who is standing behind Maciukiewicz and holding a long black comb.
“I’ll do it myself,” he responds.

Leaning into the mirror, Maciukiewicz grabs the hair at the top of his head and in one fluid jerk, like he’s plucking the top off a jack-o’-lantern, removes it entirely. Before placing it in the technician’s outreached hands, Maciukiewicz brings the hair to his face and, impulsively, sniffs it.[…]
