The “pill” suppresses ovulation by the combined actions of the hormones estrogen and progestin or in some cases progestin alone. According to The American Hair loss Association and most hair loss experts, women who are predisposed to androgenic alopecia or common female pattern hair loss can be hypersensitive to the hormonal changes taking place while on the pill or other hormonal forms of birth control. These changes can trigger the early onset of genetic hair loss which can occur while on the pill or several weeks or months after stopping the pill. Once that trigger is switched on, it is might not be able to be switched off. If you ever wondered why women’s hair loss seems more prevalent today than in any other time in history, take a close look at the side effects of these hormonal medications and you might find the answer.
